This box is filled to the brim with components that cover the primary functions of cells, including a double-sided game board, plant board, cell component cards, compound and macromolecule resources, and scenarios featuring cacti and mangroves. The game also includes a solo mode for individual play.

Cellulose is a worker placement board game set inside a plant cell. It is designed to model the functions and tensions of plant cells within larger organisms. The scenarios in the game tailor the gameplay story to different plant species, presenting unique circumstances and adaptations. Each scenario sets realistic conditions that guide players to make decisions that parallel plant responses, resulting in exciting variations of play.

An Educational and Entertaining Science Board Game

The game is played over three phases: Sunrise, Daytime, and Evening. In the Sunrise phase, players collect resources and take bonus actions based on their markers on the plant board. The Daytime phase involves players claiming limited action spaces on the cell board to gather water and CO2, undergo photosynthesis to produce carbohydrates, and place these carbohydrates into the cell wall to score points. The Evening phase allows players to recover their action markers, refresh the board, and build the next space on the cell wall. The player who contributes the most water to the central vacuole earns points and an additional action marker for the following round.

Players have the opportunity to acquire and play cell component cards, which provide various bonuses. Protein storage vacuoles recover action markers, enzymes allow for chaining bonus actions, and specialization cards like hormone receptors offer endgame scoring opportunities and special powers.
